Safety Day at the Port of Salalah

2007-10-29

The safety of our people is the top priority. The Port of Salalah marked its drive towards the safety of all colleagues by participating in APM Terminals’ “Global Safety Day” on 24th October 2007. All port operations were stopped for 30 minutes to ensure that all staff engaged in discussions on how safe operations can be ensured at the waterfront as well as in the offices. Gary Lemke, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Salalah says: “The Port of Salalah works very hard at achieving operations that are safe for all of us. I am proud to say we have improved our safety records by about 40% over the last year alone, but we have a zero tolerance to accidents, and we believe that any accident can and must be avoided so the work continues.”

Ali Shamas, Senior Manager for Health, Safety, Security & Environment concludes: “It is every colleague’s responsibility to be safe, and ensure the safety of others. The event today was a great opportunity to provide a platform for discussions where we could all discuss what this means; what we are doing right today, what we must still do better, and what we can learn from our colleagues at APM Terminals’ more than 50 facilities throughout the world.”

The Port of Salalah in Southern Oman is the country’s largest container port that serves as a gateway to other ports at the Indian Ocean Rim and the world, as well as the bulk and general cargo port that predominantly caters for importers and exports in Dhofar and Salalah. The port is managed by APM Terminals, a leading global container terminal owner and operator of more than 50 terminals.
