HANDOVER OF CRANES

The Port of Salalah Maintenance Service Department today began the handing over of four new super-post-panamax quay cranes and five rubber-tired gantry cranes to the ports Operations Department for immediate use along the ports recently completed fifth and sixth berths. Both Cranes and RTG’s were manufactured by ZPMC in China. The cranes have been manufactured, delivered, tested and commissioned in just 13 months from the signing of the contract. The cranes have an outreach of 68.5 meters across 23 containers and can hoist 65 tons making them amongst the largest in the world.
Mr. Ron Burch, Senior Engineering Manager for the port said “The Quay Cranes have been commissioned and put into operation in only 30 days from being off-loaded from the delivery vessel in Salalah. For any port this is a noteworthy achievement. This has been an exceptionally challenging project for all those concerned and I am proud to say the team in Salalah did an exceptional job. The arrival of these cranes which can reach across 23 containers strongly reconfirms the management strategy to build for the future by employing state of the art equipment and facilities”

The Port of Salalah is Oman’s largest port. Managed by APM Terminals the port is a made up of a Container Terminal with 6 berths of up to18m depth and a General Cargo Terminal of 12 berths of up to 16m depth. Development and expansion of both terminals is ongoing and will double the port’s capacity over the next four years.
