PORT OF SALALAH RECEIVES NEW CRANES

Port of Salalah has taken delivery of four new super-postpanamax quay cranes and five rubber-tired gantry cranes. The cranes will be deployed along the ports recently completed fifth and sixth berths making a total of 21of the world’s largest cranes now in Salalah. The ports latest acquisitions will bring the total annual capacity of the port to over 4 million TEU (Twenty Foot Container Equivalent Units). 4 similar cranes are expected in the first quarter 2009 and will complete the super-structure that has been planned for the ports first 6 berths. Development of “Terminal 2” has begun and will see an additional 3 container berths constructed by 2012.
The ports newest cranes were made by the Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Company (ZPMC). With a twin-lift capability, the quay cranes have an outreach of 68.5 meters across 23 containers and can hoist 65 tons.
